Why should you consume smoothies in November?

Published

on

Milkshake

Soft and smooth, completely green or with the colors of red fruits, the smoothie is, with its evocative name of roundness (from the English “smooth”, which means unctuous and smooth), a drink with regressive and comforting accents. Derived from the milkshake, a high-calorie dessert, the milkshake was born in the United States in the 1880s. Made with milk, whiskey and eggs, it was enriched with syrup a few years later. The milkshake gained its letters of nobility with the arrival of the blender that gave it the lightness of the foam and the richness of the ice cream that was later added to it.

And the shakes!

If in the 50s the milkshake became the emblem of fashionable dinners, ten years later the milkshake prevailed. Several inventors claim its legitimacy, but the truth is that the shake was born for people who wanted to find a healthy alternative to the shake… without taking away its energetic role! Foodies like Californian surfers gave birth to the smoothie in the 1960s. Although it still looks more like a dessert than a drink with its combination of fruits or vegetables, milk, cottage cheese or yogurt, cereal, crushed ice or even milk ice cream or sorbet. Americans even tend to add food supplements! Its secret whatever the recipe: taste it as soon as it is prepared.

Is the smoothie a juice?

The former is as thick as the latter can be fluid. The juice is obtained after being extracted from the fruit, with an extractor, a centrifuge or simply a manual juicer. We leave the solid part of the fruit on one side and the liquid part on the other (unless we keep the pulp of the citrus juice). If it is 100% natural, then the juice contains no preservatives or added sugars. It is consumed immediately to keep all its nutrients and vitamins intact. Juices called “nectar” are made from concentrated juice to which more or less water has been added. Smoothie, on the other hand, has a thicker texture than juice. It is obtained not by extracting the juice from the fruit but by mixing the fruit and combining this fruit puree with other mixed elements such as milk (vegetable or not), yogurt,

Its difference with the milkshake is precisely that it is not made up exclusively of milk and fruit (and milk ice cream). You can find it in the market, but the milkshake is mainly prepared at home with a mixer, or mixer. Juices or smoothies both contain the good nutrients of fruits and vegetables: vitamins, minerals, natural sugars, antioxidants and fibers as long as the fruits are not totally crushed and filtered. And this is where the smoothie is more interesting than the juice: rich in fiber, it allows better assimilation of sugars. And since the smoothie is not only vegetables but also fats (milk, almonds, dates…), it is a more balanced drink. In fact, associated with good fats, sugar is better tolerated.

The tone in a smoothie?

As long as you vary the recipes and prepare it with seasonal fruits and vegetables, the shake is an interesting drink from a nutritional point of view. Be careful, if sometimes it is also offered as a substitute for a meal (in a super protein version), it is not in this role that we prefer it. A real food is always meant to be chewed in a minimum of twenty minutes to be perfectly assimilated in a cycle of nutrition/digestion, and not to be drunk in thirty seconds. The other condition for the shake to remain an ally of fitness is precisely not to abuse it. A small glass a day at most is enough, sipped slowly as a nutritious snack, for example, and not as a thirst quencher.

diet shake

Naturopaths also practice it as a monodiet. Its role is then to rest the digestive functions by consuming a single type of food. The shake is a great traffic accelerator. Attention, in case of diabetes or any other proven chronic disease, ask your doctor’s opinion before undertaking this cure. It is planned for a maximum of five days, three being an ideal duration, one or two days that already allow the body to observe a rest. If the shakes are well chosen (not very high in sugar), they also allow you to lose a little weight during the mono diet. But the main virtue is to allow the intestines to clean themselves, thanks to the fiber content of the shakes, even if they are partially crushed by the action of the blender.

What is the shake for?

Good news, recipes are as prolific as your imagination can be! Choose plant-based smoothies, which are less sweet than the 100% fruit versions. If you follow a mono-diet, supplement with water throughout the day and drink the shakes instead of your meals. If the smoothie is just a pleasure drink, opt for seasonal recipes based on organic products preferably. In September, you can choose between: peach, melon, plum, watermelon, pear, apple, grape, fig, banana, mango, pineapple, lemon, pomegranate, sweet potato. On the side of vegetables: beets, carrots, leeks, celery, turnips, artichokes, fennel, green beans, celery, zucchini, peppers, tomatoes, pumpkin.

How to implement the “brake” trick?

According to experts, efficient and smart driving can save you a lot of money on fuel. Therefore, they often recommend avoiding sudden acceleration and braking and trying, as much as possible, to maintain a constant speed.

But what is this famous “brake” method that everyone is talking about right now? In fact, it emphasizes letting the vehicle roll by its own inertia: specifically, you have to take your foot off the accelerator and let the car roll in gear. Your foot must be on the brake pedal to make the necessary corrections to adapt your speed. In this way, progressive braking is achieved with less wear on both the gearbox and the clutch. Therefore, in addition to saving fuel, it also extends the useful life of these two fundamental elements of the car.

NB : the “brake” trick can reduce the vehicle’s fuel consumption by up to 2%. Of course, make sure you always drive within the legal safety distance.

Respecting the authorized maximum speed, you can even use fourth gear in the city. In gasoline-powered vehicles, the optimal time to change gear is between 2,000 and 2,500 rpm. According to the General Directorate of Roads and Land Transport, the optimal speed to save fuel is 90 km/h. From this speed, a vehicle traveling at 120 kilometers per hour can consume up to 30% more.
