We all know those foods that comfort us and comfort us when we feel down. For some it will be the chocolate that will calm the anxiety, for others the packet of chips or the sausage that we had in reserve for the aperitif… Once devoured and savored they make us feel much better… Almost happy? Tender foods have nothing to do with hunger, of course. In fact, most of the time very sweet or very salty, they “anesthetize” our emotions and the brain literally goes into “pause”. If eating like this calms our anxieties, fills the boredom, loneliness or makes us momentarily forget our little annoyances, it is above all linked to the fact that the first emotional bond that unites the baby with its mother is woven around the act of parenting. Later, as children, we all knew the candy or the piece of bread that came to comfort us from great pain. If these rewarding or comfort foods were to be systematic, it’s a safe bet, according to psychiatrists and certain food specialists, that it will become an ingrained reflex once you become an adult. And if certain foods comfort us more than others, it is often linked to our own history where taste memories intermingle with very specific moments in our lives.

That said, the passionate relationship we have with a food can come from the food itself. This is shown by an American study1 dealing with “addiction” to cheese: It wasn’t the pizza itself that made the students in the experiment addicted, but the melted cheeses that cover it. One of the substances they contain comes from one of the components of casein, casomorphin. It would increase dopamine, the hormone of pleasure and motivation. Others, better known, have calming effects, such as the tryptophan in chocolate, which increases the secretion of serotonin, a hormone of well-being.

Researchers at the University of Leuven in Belgium demonstrated a few years agotwothat it is not the sweet or salty taste of food that, contrary to what one might think, is good, but its high fat content.

The experiment consisted of injecting fatty acids or a saline product into the stomach of two groups of non-obese women on days of depression or low diet, days determined by functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). The researchers first observed that the injection of fat reduced compensatory behaviors (throwing chocolate, for example), then they observed that, under the effect of fatty acids, the activation of certain areas of the brain by the production of a hormone was blocked. Eating fatty foods would therefore have calming effects on our emotions and even on deeper imbalances such as eating disorders (anorexia, bulimia) or depression.

Save a dose of pleasure

Without small pleasures, well, hello sadness! Without the croissant on Sunday, the glass of wine, the toast of rillettes… -in addition to the desire for transgression that we never stop feeding- the metabolism is disturbed, the body is sensitized and loses part of its immunity by becoming thus doing it more permeable to imbalances and chronic diseases. Giving ourselves pleasures, confronting the body with excesses from time to time, also allows our body and mind to adapt. Feel no more guilty as we tell you it’s good for you!

Even so, systematically taking refuge in your ice cream tub or your Nutella toast at the slightest concern can be problematic for our weight, and ultimately for our health. Other studies also show that a diet less loaded with additives, sugars and saturated fats not only ensures better physical health, but also long-lasting mental well-being.

Silencing our emotions and eating just for the energy and pleasure it provides is easier said than done! However, we can tend to this behavior by starting to become aware of what is at stake when we seek comfort at the plate. Analyze how you feel when you start your package of cakes (boredom, sadness, frustration, anger, abandonment), then while you eat it (relief, fullness, happiness) and afterwards (guilt, discomfort). Being aware of these mechanisms is essential because it allows us to escape the influence of our emotions. So, when you feel bad and want chocolate, let’s face it by saying “Okay, I allow myself this pleasure and I savor it”; so we will make it a nice time, happy! – which shortens negative emotions and guilt! And the interesting thing is that in this case we have fewer temptations to finish the tablet.
